This is one of the best pentium 4's you can get for your socket 478 motherboard. With a good video card anf good memory, you will be set for many games at high resolution and graphic levels. |

The Over-Clocking Trade-off 2006-05-08 13:55:09 Reviewed by Bonzai Duck from RIVERSIDE, CA US

Poor me. Lucky me. I started over-clocking the systems I built in 2004. I had picked up an ASUS P4P800 mobo, a Pentium4 2.4C Northwood processor, and an OCZ Gold EL DDR500 dual channel kit (2x512mb).
That was a stable system, but I wanted more. I had to have more. I switched over to the Prescott 3.2E, and swapped out the 1GB memories for a 2GB kit. This time, I had the system running FSB @ 1,000 Mhz. But the memory controller on the mobo degraded after six months.
Forget the extreme over-clocking. I got this 3.4E OEM tray processor from Ewiz, picked up some low-latency memories, and only pushed the FSB to 868 Mhz this time. The bandwidth on the memory is 400 MB/sec higher than the "so-called" high performance modules running at 500 Mhz!
This 3.4E processor at a 9% over-clock pushes up to 3.69 Ghz, and the high-bandwidth on the low-latency modules gives better performance than the DDR500's.
Now . . . . I'm waiting for "Conroe" . . . . and beyond . . . . .
This processor is the E0 stepping -- it's an SL7PP, and seems to provide a great deal of over-clocking flexibility. But the speed is already high, and the L2 cache really pumps out the performance with low-latency RAM. Also -- with the right cooler, it doesn't seem to heat up beyond 40C at 70F room temperature while running at full load.
At this price, it's worth it. |

Not bad but not good for gaming. 2006-11-02 16:01:33 Reviewed by Anonymous from Denver, PA US

This thing is a little slow when it comes to gaming but its still not too bad.
If you compare it to AMD on the other hand then AMD owns. |

this processor is alright if you just want to upgrade and your board supports it but for the money you should get a little bit slower of a speed so you can save money and buy an even better processor in a few years. this processor is alright but it isn't the best. make sure to get a good heatsink too because it is a preshottttt! |

I ordered one of these on may 16, 2007. It arrived several days later and was installed immediately using arctic silver and a Thermaltake cooler. It ran great until about August 21 when it died and took my mobo with it.
It was never overclocked and the temp never went above 57 (that I saw). Now I'm SOL because I missed the warranty by a few days. |

I decided to stick with my Dell 8300, 4 years old. So this was the best option. The chip makes a noticible difference in gaming. I originally had a 2.6ghz chip. If you are sticking with the 478 you might as well upgrade to this. I also threw in a EVGA 7800 GS and I'm getting a little over 100 FPS in Counter Strike and games like Half-Life 2 are running a lot clearer.
This thing runs hot like everyone says. Unfortunately Dell has an odd set up for their Special heat sink. So I have to order a new Socket 478 Heatsink Retention Module to put in the cpu fan I ordered. |

I can't even get support for this chip. Per intel it should work in a d865perl but it just sits there. Yes, there is a new cooling fan on it. The system is black and doesnt even boot. |

This is the Prescott with 1 MB cache. For the price, this is the best bang for your buck as far as 478 CPU's go. After testing my rig on PC Pitstop, results were that I had one of the fastest PC's tested! That's what I like to hear. This CPU is known to run hot, so I suggest not skimpping on the heatsink. Spend the extra bucks for a good quality & quiet heatsink/fan. |
Some won't work in hyper-threading mode 2007-05-23 07:57:12 Reviewed by Larry Miller from Kingsport, TN US

After a few weeks of not being able to get some programs to run, I found out it would not work with hyper-threading turned on. After investigating it turns out some were made that way, a manufacturing defect I guess. Don't know if eWiz knew this or not when they sold it. Even with hyper-threading turned off it still runs slower than my originial 2.8 GHz. A total waste of money. !4 day guarantee was not enough time to realize, investigate, and determine what was going on. |
